Vocal Sounds: The Key to Identifying Male vs Female Black-bellied Whistling Ducks

Black-bellied whistling ducks are monomorphic, which simply means that males and females look identical in both size and plumage. In other words, adults of this species are almost impossible to tell apart just by appearance.

Both sexes share the same striking features: a gray head, chestnut-coloured back and chest, black belly, and brown-and-black wings marked with a bold white stripe. They also have long pink legs and a bright pink bill. Because of this, plumage offers no reliable way to separate males from females.

This is very different from most other duck species, where males and females can be differentiated quite easily. In many ducks, males are more brightly coloured (especially during the breeding season) while females tend to have dull, mottled brown feathers that help them stay camouflaged while nesting. This difference is known as sexual dimorphism and is clearly seen in species like mallards, where the male has a glossy green head and the female is mottled brown.

Size and body shape can sometimes provide additional clues in other duck species, although the differences are usually subtle. Males are often slightly larger and more robust, while females may appear a bit smaller and more streamlined.

However, in black-bellied whistling ducks, even size and body shape are not helpful for identification. Both sexes are virtually the same size, with a length of about 47 to 56 cm (19 to 22 in), a body mass ranging from 652 to 1,020 g (1.4 to 2.2 lb), and a wingspan of 76 to 94 cm (30 to 37 in).

Within a flock, the only individuals that appear noticeably smaller are juveniles and first-year birds. These younger ducks are often duller in appearance and can sometimes be mistaken for females by inexperienced observers. However, this size difference is due to age, not sex, meaning that smaller birds can be either males or females.

Vocalization: The Best Clue for Sexing Black-bellied Whistling Ducks

Because it is so difficult to distinguish male and female black-bellied whistling ducks using the usual methods such as plumage, size, bill colour, or tail markings, the most reliable way appears to be through vocalization.

If you listen carefully to their calls, you may notice that males and females produce slightly different sounds. However, these differences are not obvious to the human ear, which is why researchers have turned to more detailed analysis.

In 2003, a group of researchers in Berlin, Germany found a way to distinguish the sexes using vocal recordings of whistling ducks. Interestingly, they discovered that the key difference was not pitch or frequency, but the duration of individual notes within the call.

Their findings showed that males consistently produce slightly longer note durations than females. The final part of the call—the closing note—was particularly important in this distinction. In general, calls with a note duration longer than about 0.13 seconds were identified as male, while those shorter than about 0.12 seconds were identified as female.

This makes vocalisation one of the most reliable scientific tools for sexing black-bellied whistling ducks, especially in situations where visual identification is not possible.

Behavioural Clues: Helpful in Theory, But Not Very Practical

Apart from vocalisation, there are a few other ways people sometimes try to tell male and female black-bellied whistling ducks apart. However, these methods are often not practical for a casual observer or birder who simply wants a quick answer in the field.

One approach is to study behaviour during courtship. In many cases, males may appear more active during courtship displays. They can be seen head-bobbing, chasing, or performing attention-seeking movements to attract a female. If you are lucky enough to observe mating behaviour, the bird taking the more active or display-oriented role is usually the male.

Another simple (but rather obvious) clue is egg-laying. Naturally, the bird that lays the eggs is the female. While this is accurate, it is not exactly a helpful field method unless you are observing a nest very closely over time.

Some observers also suggest watching nesting behaviour. For example, the bird that spends more time on the nest or appears to be guarding it might be assumed to be the female, while the other stands guard nearby. However, this can easily lead to confusion.

In black-bellied whistling ducks, both sexes share many parental duties. They often take turns incubating the eggs, and incubation time is fairly evenly divided between males and females. They also both help protect and care for the young, which makes behavioural separation unreliable if you are trying to sex the birds quickly.

In the end, while behaviour can offer interesting clues, it is not a dependable method for quick identification. This is what makes the black-bellied whistling duck such a fascinating species—simple questions like “male or female?” are not always easy to answer.
